Skyland Claims Resolution

Insurance appraiser services

When either party invokes a policy's appraisal clause, each side names its own appraiser. Skyland serves as the party-appointed appraiser for policyholders, for attorneys' clients and for insurance carriers.

A party-appointed appraiser values the disputed loss for the side that appointed them and works with the other side's appraiser to reach an agreed amount. Items the two appraisers cannot agree on go to the umpire.

What Skyland's appraiser work includes

  • Review of the policy's appraisal clause, the demand and any deadlines in it
  • Inspection of the property and photo documentation of the disputed damage
  • An itemized estimate of the disputed items, stating actual cash value and replacement cost where the policy calls for both
  • Exchange of estimates and item-by-item discussion with the other appraiser
  • A written submission to the umpire on any items still in dispute
  • Signature of the award once two members of the panel agree

Competent and impartial

Appraisal clauses use different words for the appraiser: competent and impartial, competent and disinterested, or competent and independent. Courts in different states read those words differently. Skyland reads the clause on each claim before accepting, runs a conflict check, and charges hourly or flat fees that do not depend on the amount of the award. How fees work ›
